Five Verses That Show God's Law Is Still In Effect Today!

There has been a lot of discussion in the circles I frequent about the law of God and whether or not it is still in effect. Here are five verses that conclusively prove that the law of God is still in effect today.

#1 Romans 2:22-24 NKJV You who say, "Do not commit adultery," do you commit adultery? You who abhor idols, do you rob temples?

23 You who make your boast in the law, do you dishonor God through breaking the law?

24 For "the name of God is blasphemed among the Gentiles because of you," as it is written.

Romans was written to the mainly non-Jewish congregation in Rome, which makes this section especially interesting. Notice in verse twenty-four, Paul is getting on their case for being hypocrites, saying, “Do not commit adultery” while they are committing adultery themselves. Obviously, it’s a bad thing to commit adultery, so what Paul is getting on them for is not them saying it’s wrong; it’s the fact that they are doing it themselves. This brings us to verse twenty-three. They were claiming to keep God’s law, yet they dishonored God by breaking it. Remember, these are mainly non-Jewish Christians who are still keeping God’s law or rather dishonoring God by breaking it.

#2 Matthew 5:17-20 NKJV "Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill.

18 "For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.

19 "Whoever therefore breaks one of the least of these commandments, and teaches men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever does and teaches [them], he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

20 "For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds [the righteousness] of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven.

In Christ’s own words, He plainly declares that not only those who do His commandments but those who teach others to do the least of them shall be called great in the kingdom of God. For those who say that the law of God and the law of Moses are different, well, here, Christ plainly says which law is His. The law that is written in the books of the Old Testament. In fact, if He was saying that He would do away with the law by saying He fulfilled it, then He would be directly contradicting Himself in the very next verse when He says to do the least of His commandments.

#3 Luke 16:16-18 NLT "Until John the Baptist, the law of Moses and the messages of the prophets were your guides. But now the Good News of the Kingdom of God is preached, and everyone is eager to get in.

17 But that doesn't mean that the law has lost its force. It is easier for heaven and earth to disappear than for the smallest point of God's law to be overturned.

18 "For example, a man who divorces his wife and marries someone else commits adultery. And anyone who marries a woman divorced from her husband commits adultery."

Christ demonstrates that the gospel He is preaching is the same one as the law and the prophets spoke of. He didn’t do away with the law; instead, He expanded and reinforced the validity of the law. We see another example of this later on in the new testament.

#4 Acts 17:10-12 NLT That very night the believers sent Paul and Silas to Berea. When they arrived there, they went to the Jewish synagogue.

11 And the people of Berea were more open-minded than those in Thessalonica, and they listened eagerly to Paul's message. They searched the Scriptures day after day to see if Paul and Silas were teaching the truth.

12 As a result, many Jews believed, as did many of the prominent Greek women and men.

Here we find something very interesting. At first glance, it might not be obvious what it is that demonstrates that the Old Testament was the same doctrine that Paul was teaching, but give it a moment. It helps if you know some of the timelines of the new testament. At this point, all of the books of the New Testament have yet to be written or, at the very least, canonized. This means that the scriptures they were reading from, proving what Paul was saying to be true, were the Old Testament. This proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that the message Paul was preaching was in-line with and the same as God's message in the Old Testament.

#5 Romans 7:12 NLT But still, the law itself is holy, and its commands are holy and right and good.

This one doesn’t need much explanation. God’s law is good and Holy, just as He is good and Holy.

There you have it! Five reasons the Law of God is still in effect today! God’s law is not a burden and never has been unless you try to go against it. Don’t just take my word for it; study it for yourself and see the view that the people of the Bible held of the law. David and Job especially loved God’s law. If we follow their example and especially Christ's example, how should we view the law today? The law was the Father's, and Christ loved His Father's commands. Can we do any less?
